University Housing Accommodations and Considerations

*To receive housing accommodations at SDSU, students must first complete the housing application. After that, they should contact the Office of Disability Services (ODS) and the Residential Life Office to start the accommodation process.

Students with disabilities who need accommodations in university housing typically need to provide current documentation of their disability to ODS. One exception to this is if a student uses a mobility device, such as a wheelchair.

Verification of Disability Form

ODS and Housing and Residential Life work together to provide accommodations in university housing. However, ODS does not handle specific hall assignments, just the features needed for accommodations. Examples of accommodations include first-floor or elevator access, a strobe fire alarm for students with hearing loss or permission to have a support animal live with them.

University Housing Accommodation Deadlines

Important deadlines:

  • To get a Fall housing accommodations, students must complete the housing application and the accommodations process by May 1. For example, housing accommodations needed by Fall 2025 must be completed by May 1, 2025, to guarantee accommodation needs will be met.
  • For Spring housing accommodations, the deadline is Nov. 1. For example, housing accommodations needed by Spring 2025 must be completed by Nov. 1, 2024, to guarantee accommodation needs will be met.

If the request is made less than 60 days before moving into the residence hall, SDSU cannot guarantee that it will be able to meet the individual's accommodation needs during the first semester or term of occupancy.

Steps for Requesting Housing Accommodations:

  1. The student must provide documentation from a current treating healthcare provider. For non-service support animals, a different process is followed, which can be found on the Non-Service Animals in University Housing page.
  2. The request and documentation will be reviewed by the necessary parties.
  3. A decision will be made, and the student will be informed of that decision and the steps required to implement university housing accommodations.

If the request is denied, students can reapply if they originally provided incomplete information or can appeal the decision by following the grievance process on the ODS website.
