Get set for summer employment or added experience with our American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification course!
Courses to certify new lifeguards, as well as review courses for current lifeguards, will be offered at the SDState Wellness Center through the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification course. Students must be 15 years of age prior to or on the first day of training to be eligible for this class.
This in-person Lifeguard Certification course is the required course for all individuals looking to become lifeguards. During this course, candidates will participate in an in-water practice of skills, demonstrate basic swimming ability and a classroom-based review of Red Cross administrative policies and procedures. All candidates must be present for all sessions in order to successfully pass the course in addition to the prerequisites and coursework requirements.
Prerequisites: Complete the online portion of the course/class prior to arrival at the facility. Candidates must bring their completed online training certificate in order to proceed with the course. To complete the course, candidates must be able to complete a 300-yard swim, timed event and two minutes of hands free treading water.

ARC Lifeguard (review) Courses
Lifeguard recertification can be achieved with Lifeguarding Review classes that refresh your knowledge and skills and update your certification for another two years. To participate in the Lifeguard Review class, you must have a current lifeguard certification, or certification expired by no more than 30 days.
