The School of English & Interdisciplinary Studies and Oakwood announce the Anita (Sarkees) Bahr Award for Student Creative Writing
Anita (Sarkees) Bahr grew up in Clark County and enjoyed working on the high school newspaper and yearbook staff, completing her high school journalism career as the yearbook editor. She came to SDSU in 1961, pursuing a major in journalism. However, Anita discovered her love for words and teaching and changed her major to English, graduating in 1965. Anita’s career focused on teaching English in junior and high schools. Anita is a long-time supporter of the School of English and Interdisciplinary Studies at SDSU, especially Oakwood. Thanks to her annual contributions, "Oakwood" will continue to provide an excellent opportunity for young SDSU writers and artists to be involved in the literary arts. We have established an award in her name to recognize excellent emerging writers among the SDSU undergraduate student body.
The prize comes with cash prizes for three selected entrants ($250 1st place, $150 2nd place, $100 3rd place) plus publication in the 2024 issue of "Oakwood" in April 2024 side by side with well-published authors. There is no cost to enter and every submission is eligible for publication in "Oakwood."
Deadline:
Submissions must be emailed to Tiffani Pirner between Sept. 15, 2023 and Nov. 15, 2023 with the subject line BAHR PRIZE.
