This exhibition features Paul Goble’s illustrations of Iktomi stories. Iktomi is the Lakota name for the American Indian trickster, who appears in the stories of peoples all over the North American continent. He is famous for getting into mischief, causing trouble and never learning the lessons handed out to him. Albert White Hat Sr. says in the introduction to Goble’s book, -"Walking Along -Plains Indian Trickster Stories," “The stories are ancient; they seem more like pieces of almost-forgotten stories. Even the trickster himself seems fragmentary and contradictory, being both a negative prankster and a divine helper of the Creator.”
"Iktomi and the Buzzard," "Iktomi and the Ducks," "Iktomi and the Buffalo Skull," "Iktomi and the Berries," "Iktomi and the Coyote" and "Iktomi Loses his Eyes". All of these stories are available for reference in the exhibition gallery. Many of the books they are contained in are also available for purchase in the South Dakota Art Museum Store.
