This exhibition shares some of South Dakota’s best artworks and greatest artists at four exhibiting institutions across the state through the course of the one-year traveling show. The 9th Biennial is an entirely juried exhibition featuring 66 artworks from 66 artists selected from 289 works submitted by 102 artists.

The 9th Biennial begins at the South Dakota Art Museum (March 19 - June 13, 2021) before traveling to the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls (June 26  – Sept. 19, 2021), the John A. Day Gallery at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion (Oct. 16  – Nov. 5, 2021) and the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City (Dec. 3, 2021 – March 5, 2022).

The mission of the South Dakota Governor’s Biennial Art Exhibition is to recognize and encourage South Dakota artists, to promote the artistic identity of South Dakota, to celebrate the cultural and artistic heritage and future of South Dakota and to encourage a larger sense of community and connection across separate artistic communities within the state.

The state biennial is always a celebration of artistic excellence and diversity. This traveling exhibition exposes South Dakotans and visitors to the state to the range and quality of artistic practices taking shape here and now.

9th Biennial Artist Cocktail Hour Chats

As an alternative to an opening reception, we invited the exhibition artists to share their works and practices through virtual artist chat gatherings hosted by South Dakota Art Museum Exhibitions Curator, Jodi Lundgren. Thirty artists responded and the result is this series of artist chats "curated" around connecting themes. We invite you to enjoy the replays of these programs to get a deeper appreciation of the practices and works of these artists from across South Dakota.
