“Moments of Is” gathers artworks by eight artists who have participated in the Stuart Artist-in-Residence (AiR) program at South Dakota State University. Begun in 2015, the AiR program was conceived by Joseph and Signe Stuart—two key individuals in the history of the University, this museum and the visual arts in South Dakota. Joseph was director of the South Dakota Art Museum from 1971 to 1994, and Signe was SDSU professor of art from 1972–1994. Funded by the sale of an Agnes Martin drawing from the couple’s personal collection, the AiR program brings an artist to the SDSU campus each fall to work from the Ritz Gallery studio space, to interact with faculty and students and to create a culminating exhibition.
The Stuart AiR Alums represented in this space exhibit the strength of the program, which particularly encourages participation by artists who live and work outside the South Dakota region. This criteria has brought artists from Iowa, Florida, New York, Oregon and beyond to the campus. As a group, these artists and their works represent a dedication to discovery, experimentation and a collaborative expansion of ideas which are all central tenets of the Stuarts and of the SDSU School of Design.
The exhibition title is adopted from the name of one of Signe Stuart’s own paintings and evokes the accomplishments of the program. It suggests that the influence of the visiting artists has impact before, during and after their time at the University. Influences are shared. Inspiration is cemented. Ideas are planted. We hope “Moments of Is” will broaden this impact to you.
