Victim Information
If you are a victim or a witness of an assault, sexual assault, dating/domestic violence or any other crime, the SDSU Police Department can help. First know this: it is not your fault! The SDSU Police Department has a victim-centered philosophy. We will listen to your story and then inform you of all your options. Once you are informed of all your options, you are in control of what happens next based on an informed decision. We can assist in connecting victims with counseling, medical attention, temporary housing or anything other needs specific to your case.
Talking to the police can be scary. You will be informed on what steps we will take to investigate your case. There are a lot of misconceptions out there on how police respond to these cases. Our department has experience and training in handling cases of this nature.
You have rights as a victim. South Dakota passed Marsy's Law which outlines victim rights. See this informational document from the South Dakota Attorney General's Office, Marsy's Law Rights of Victim
What to do if you are sexually assaulted:
- Get away from the attacker and find a safe place to call 911 or the SDSU Police Department.
- Call a friend or family member you trust.
- Try not to wash, comb or clean any part of your body.
- Go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
