Sewing hope / SDSU staffer turns hobby into community service work
Some people garden. Some people bowl. For Sue Fierstine, her hobby is sewing, and she uses the hobby to help others. The organization currently benefitting from Fierstine’s seamstress skills is Delivering Hope.
Formed in February 2014 by Rachel Schuldt of Sioux Falls, Delivering Hope delivers tangible messages of hope to cancer patients using oncology services at the Avera and Sanford hospitals in Sioux Falls and the Sioux City, Iowa, hospital.

SDSU named nation’s top civil engineering student chapter for third straight year
For the third year in a row, the award for the best student chapter of civil engineering students went to South Dakota State University.
The Robert Ridgway Student Chapter Award is presented by the American Society of Civil Engineers to the top chapter nationwide. On April 18, adviser Zach Gutzmer learned that the SDSU chapter was tops among 416 student chapters nationwide and 26 foreign countries. The Master of Science in data science program at South Dakota State University received the No. 4 spot in a 2024 list by Tech Guide ranking quality and affordability of graduate degrees in data science.
Rogers named May’s Civil Service Employee of the Month
Matthew Rogers, an equipment mechanic for South Dakota State University Facilities and Services, has been named SDSU Civil Service Employee of the Month for May.
SDSU commits to cost transparency
South Dakota State University has recently become one of more than 500 schools nationwide to be listed as a partner institution with the College Cost Transparency Initiative. That means SDSU has voluntarily committed to follow a set of principles and standards that ensures transparency, clarity and understanding around communicating student financial aid offers.
SDSU reps recognized with FFA honorary degrees, distinguished service awards
South Dakota State University leaders and faculty were among the honorees as the South Dakota FFA Honorary State Degrees and Distinguished Service Awards were presented at the 96th annual South Dakota State FFA Convention on April 19 in Brookings.
