The Mechanical Engineering Department offers the Master of Science in mechanical engineering and the Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering degrees.
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
There are three options available for the Master of Science (M.S.) degree.
- Thesis (Option "A") for those interested in conducting research.
- Design paper (Option "B") for those wishing to concentrate on engineering design.
- Course work only (Option "C").
Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is a research degree leading to work in academics, industry or government research and development. Candidates may enter the program directly from a bachelor's program or after completing an M.S. degree.
Master of Engineering
The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree is a professional master's degree designed to prepare engineers for roles as technical leaders and managers. The M.Eng. degree is offered through the Department of Construction and Concrete Industry Management. A Mechanical Engineering track is available.
Faculty members are engaged in variety of research projects including:
- Advanced materials
- Material testing techniques
- Biomaterials and bioprocessing
- Computational fluid dynamics and advanced modeling and simulation
- Advanced heat transfer devices
- Improving process energy efficiency
- Advanced manufacturing systems
- Robotics and autonomous systems
- Biomedical applications
A limited number of teaching and research assistantships are available each year.
Admission to Graduate School
A Bachelor of Science or an equivalent degree in mechanical engineering, or in a related engineering field, is required for consideration for admission. Admission is granted based on level of academic performance as established by the strength of institution attended, course work completed, and grade point average. A minimum TOEFL score of 525 paper-based or 197 computer-based is required for foreign applicants. No GRE test is required. Please note that the application fee cannot be waived.
