Nursing Career Fair

Connecting nurses and employers

Each fall and spring we hold a career fair at the Brookings and Rapid City sites. We invite vendors and current students to join us for these events to chat about future nursing career possibilities. Future nurses can learn about benefits, openings and programs available to new nurses in a variety of organizations. Our career fairs are open to SDSU nursing students at no fee. The fairs at both sites feature health care employers from around the region.

Spring 2025 Fairs

Brookings: The spring 2025 nursing career fair will take place at the University Student Union in the Volstorff Ballroom in Brookings. The date is TBD.

Rapid City: We plan to have the next nursing career fair in Rapid City fall 2025.

Employer and Recruiter Information

Brookings: Register by the early bird deadline to take advantage a reduced registration fee of $250. If you register after the early bird deadline, the fee is $325. No refunds. Please check back in December to Register or contact Amanda Larson with questions.

Rapid City:  Please check back to register or contact Allyson Stromer with questions.

In Brookings, we hold our Nursing Career Fair twice a year, in the fall and spring. Typically September and January.

SDSU College of Nursing prides itself with graduating talented and clinically skilled nurses. Our faculty is dedicated to ensuring that our students are ready to practice and make an impact in our region, nation and world. By participating, you not only get a chance to meet and recruit great nurses, but you also give our students the opportunity to see all of the great things that you have to offer.

Student Information

  1. Explore Opportunities: The fair is a great chance to learn about internships, externships, full-time jobs, and summer roles like CNA, patient care technician, and nurse aide. It’s never too early to start thinking about your career!
  2. For Pre-Nursing Students: If you’re in the early stages of your nursing education, this is a perfect opportunity to see what’s out there and start making connections.
  3. For All Students: No matter where you are in your program, attending the fair will help you practice your interview skills, discover a range of nursing opportunities both in South Dakota and beyond, and start building a network of professional contacts.
  4. Scholarship Opportunities: Some employers will be offering scholarships, so it’s a great chance to get some extra support for your studies. Be sure to ask about these when you’re talking to recruiters.
  1. Do Your Homework: Check out the organizations that will be there. Knowing a bit about them will help you make a great impression.
  2. Perfect Your Elevator Speech: Have a quick introduction ready that includes:
    • Your name, year in school, major, and minor (if you have one).
    • Your career goals and why you’re passionate about nursing.
    • What you know about the company and why you’re interested.
    • Questions about the positions they have available.

Practice this a few times so you can deliver it smoothly.

  1. Dress the Part: Feel free to wear your nursing scrubs if you’d like—it’s a great way to show your professional side. If you’re not in scrubs, just make sure your outfit is appropriate for a professional event.
  2. Have Fun and Engage: There will be some great giveaways and prizes, so definitely check those out! But remember, the main goal is to connect with recruiters and learn about the opportunities they have.
  3. Ask Questions: Show your interest by asking questions like: For Graduating Students:
    • What positions will be available for new grads?
    • Are there any extra qualifications needed besides a degree?
    • What career paths do entry-level positions typically lead to?

For Non-Graduating Students:

  • What courses or experiences would make me a stronger candidate?
  • Are there any internships or part-time jobs that fit around my classes?
  1. Show What You’ve Got: When you’re talking with employers, focus on what you can offer them. Highlight your skills and how you’d be an asset to their team.

We’re looking forward to seeing you at the fair and helping you take the next step in your nursing career!
