Students tee up for on-the-course learning 

Preparing for the golf event of the year in Sioux Falls takes some work. It’s the behind-the-scenes preparation that many don’t think about or notice but takes considerable time and effort. Roughly 50 South Dakota State University students spent time on Sept. 3 and 5 helping the Minnehaha Country Club and Pro Links Sports prepare for the PGA Tour Champions event.

Diminutive Miller raises stature of SDSU

Former SDSU President Peggy Miller joined a group of nine other people to be inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame at ceremonies in Chamberlain Sept. 13-14. Miller, who served as SDSU’s 18th president from Jan. 1, 1998, to Dec. 31, 2006, became only the third out of the land-grant university’s 20 presidents to be inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame, joining Robert Wagner (1998) and Hilton Briggs (1980).

New certificate offers ‘tryout’ for teacher education

The Gateway to Teacher Education undergraduate certificate, approved by the South Dakota Board of Regents in July and available through the state’s public universities starting this fall, offers students across South Dakota an opportunity to explore a career in K-12 teacher education.

The SDSU Foundation will host the university’s eighth annual giving day on Thursday, Sept. 5. The 24-hour campaign invites Jackrabbits everywhere to join together in celebration of SDSU and the incredible impact of philanthropic giving.

‘Bridge camp’ prepares next engineering leaders

A chance to move in early, meet faculty, explore Brookings and develop leadership skills. The benefits of the South Dakota State University Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering Leadership Summer Bridge program spans beyond academics. Growing from eight students at the inaugural camp to 53 participants this August, the Summer Bridge program serves as a metaphorical bridge from high school to college. The programming aims to develop community among the students and set them up as future leaders, both in the College of Engineering and in their careers.

New construction, concrete head arrives

New department head Julian Kang didn’t have much time to decide which clothes to pack for his new job as head of the Department of Construction and Concrete Industry Management within the Lohr College of Engineering at South Dakota State University. He accepted the college’s offer on Aug. 14 and was at his new position Aug. 22 with classes beginning Aug. 26. “Indeed, it has been a whirlwind start, but I am thrilled to be a member of the Jackrabbit family,” Kang said.
