The Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department combines all aspects of electricity, electronics, hardware and software into one multi-disciplinary unit, offering degree programs in electrical engineering and computer science with minors in computer science, biomedical engineering and software engineering.
We offer well-established research programs in materials science, nanotechnology, sensors, photovoltaics and satellite image processing. Our alumni are successful practitioners of these disciplines worldwide.
Faculty
Seventeen teaching faculty are dedicated to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education and advising. Our faculty regularly integrate their research work into the classroom. This provides students with an up-to-date perspective on the changing technical challenges that graduates face in industry. Please visit our people for a list of faculty and support staff.
Laboratories and Facilities
With our investment in classrooms and laboratories, students benefit from modern lecture rooms and enjoy hands-on learning using state-of-the-art equipment. In February 2009, the department moved into a new, ultra-modern building with various classrooms, office space, and both research and student laboratories. These labs offer research experience in computing, fiber optics, electromechanical systems, electronics, digital and microcontroller systems, sensors and senior design. The second phase expansion was completed in May 2012, thus expanding the amount of classroom and laboratory space.
Student Opportunities
Part-Time Employment: Electrical engineering students have numerous opportunities to gain part-time employment and technical experience while completing their degrees. The university offers the Student Technology Fellow program that is very competitive. Electrical engineering faculty often employ undergraduate and graduate students during the semester as research assistants. Local industries also provide numerous part-time employment opportunities with flexible work hours for students.
Organizations: Many outstanding professional activities are available through the student chapters of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The electrical and computer engineering honors group, Eta Kappa Nu (HKN), has consistently been recognized nationally as an Outstanding Chapter. Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE) and the Robotics Club are also active organizations.
Career Opportunities
SDSU has been very effective in placing graduates from this department into exciting positions after graduation – reaching 100% placement for more than 20 years. While SDSU graduates work all over the world, many choose to work right here in the Midwest and in South Dakota. SDSU has a campus placement office to assist students in finding jobs. The success of our graduates has been tremendous, with many graduates achieving distinction in their respective areas of study. Please visit our employment and internships page for a list of current positions.
