What is the value of general education?
Students sometimes wonder why they must complete a broad curriculum of General Education courses outside of their academic major. They may not always see how the courses align with their goals of a degree, a job, and ultimately, a fulfilling life.
Rather than standing as obstacles to students’ graduation, the General Education requirements, by design, help students develop the knowledge, perspectives, and abilities to appreciate our society's history and aspirations, its relationship with and responsibility to the natural world, its diversity, its problems and its needs.
General Education coursework empowers students to become independent thinkers who are able to transform their learning into meaningful action. Courses provide opportunities to explore new disciplines and ideas that can open fresh perspectives on students’ world. General Education provides a solid foundation for successful academic study; lifelong learning; and meeting the duties of local, national and global citizenship.
