Richard Sayre began employment as a resident engineer with the South Dakota Department of Transportation in Sioux Falls following his graduation from SDSC. In 1962, he assumed a position with the Portland Cement Association working as a field engineer for eastern South Dakota. He went on to manage the Sioux Falls office for Schmucker, Paul, Nor and Associates providing civil consulting engineering and land surveying services.

In 1969, Mr. Sayre founded the R.F. Sayre and Associates civil engineering and land surveying firm. He served as president of the firm until 1995 and then as a project engineer until 2005. He continued to work as an advisor and mentor after his retirement.

Mr. Sayre was a registered professional engineer in South Dakota. lowa, Nebraska and Colorado during his career. He was active in the Sioux Falls community, serving on the American Disabilities Act Review Board, South Dakota Engineering Society, South Dakota Cement Association, Prairie Tree Partners. American Council of Engineering Companies as a member and national director, Portland Cement Association and Prairie Green. Inc. He also served as a member and past president for the South Dakota Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies. including a term as executive director from 1980 to 1982.
