While still a student at South Dakota State College, Donald Kukuk formed a partnership which employed 14 engineering students as surveyors for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s Oahe Project. After graduation, Kukuk worked for Boyle Engineering Corp. of San Diego, California. He started as a design engineer, then moved to project engineer, senior engineer, principal engineer and vice president/managing engineer in the San Diego office. Kukuk managed several complex civil engineering design construction projects including the City of San Diego Miramar Filtration Plant Expansion and the Jordan Valley Authority Water Treatment Plant. He was responsible for all engineering offices where specialized water systems were required.
He was director of water resource projects and master planner of water systems in Germany for the European Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was a member of the American Water Works Association, the Society of Military Engineers and the Water Environmental Federation.
