While attending South Dakota State University, Dale Jans was president of the ASCE Student Chapter and a member of both the Chi Epsilon Fraternity and TKE Fraternity. After graduation, he worked for Nioda Builders as an onsite project manager for building projects. In 1976, he relocated to Sioux City, Iowa, and became a partner in the design/build firm of G.L. Larson Company. In 1982, he moved back to Sioux Falls and started his own design/build construction company, Jans Corporation.
The South Dakota Engineering Society honored him as Young Engineer of the Year in 1988 and as Engineer of the Year in 1989. Jans Corporation was awarded a National AON Build America Award from the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America in 2004 for the Sertoma Butterfly House and also in 2010 for the Sioux Falls Seminary. He served on the SD AGC Building Chapter and was a life national director for AGC of America. He was a member of the Consulting Constructors Council of America, American Society of Civil Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, SD Engineering Society, SD Board of Technical Professionals, Engineering Dean’s Advisory Council at SDSU, SDSU Foundation Council of Trustees, SF Sertoma Club and more.
For two consecutive years he was a recipient of the Distinguished Governor Award for Sertoma and recognized as the Sertoman of the Year for the South Dakota District. In 2011, he was installed as president of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. Dale and his wife, Diane, have three children: Brad, Erin and Brian, who are all graduates of the SDSU College of Engineering.
