Biography

Patty is a professor in the Health and Nutritional Sciences department; she teaches in the physical education teacher education program. She has been at SDSU since 1991, teaching courses in the undergraduate PETE program and working with graduate students in the Sport and Recreation Studies graduate program. She has also taught a section of the Brookings School District kindergarten for the last 14 years. The courses she teaches are are Science of Movement; Theories, Strategies and Application of Instruction and Management; Skill and Fitness Competency: Lifetime Activities; Student Teaching II and II. Her research interests are in training teacher candidates to become reflective practitioners, the evolving nature of a year-long residency model, and how the use of the Stimulating Maturity for Accelerated Readiness Training (S.M.A.R.T.) program can affect the readiness levels pf young children for math and science in school. Additional work has been with the use of heart rate sensors with teacher candidates in structuring teaching lessons to get students more active in their target heart rate zones.
Patty has served as a Board of Examiners member for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE, now CAEP, Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation) since 2006, has served as a reviewer for Strategies since 1998, was been the awards chair for SHAPE SD (Society for Health and Physical Educators SD) since 1996 and a member of the Recognition committee for SHAPE Central District since 1996. She is a program reviewer for the National Council for Accreditation of Coaching Education (NCACE) and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) since 1996, and served as a lead reviewer and auditor from 2002-2008. She was also on Academic and Faculty Senate and was chair of same. She also judged women's gymnastics, both at the club and high school levels for 24 years.

Awards and Honors

Patty received the SDSU Teaching Excellence Award in 1996 the SDAHPERD Honor Award in 1996 and 2016, was the Sewery Colloquium Banquet speaker in 1999, received the Central District AAHPERD Honor Award in 1999, the SDAHPERD College Teacher of the Year Award in 2000; Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Scholar, 2005. She will receive the SHAPE America Honor at the 2017 SHAPE America National Convention in Boston.
