Hayden Barber

Biography

Dr. Hayden Barber (Ph.D., Purdue University) is an assistant professor in COJO at South Dakota State University. His research centers on the perception and impact of emotion in messages. Dr. Barber teaches a variety of classes on organizational communication as well as courses foundational to the communication studies major. He teaches using a project-based learning philosophy and enjoys mentorship as a model for teaching, regularly taking on students for independent studies.

His work has been published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships as well as the journal Metaphor and Symbol. He is currently working on manuscripts related to an NSF project on the use of emotional displays from smart technology in sustainability contexts as well as a literature review on the conceptualization and operationalization of emotion in the communication field.

He is also the current secretary for the Communication and Social Cognition division at NCA (National Communication Association) and is active in the Small Group Communication division at NCA. Dr. Barber also participates in ICA (International Communication Association) conferences.

In his free time, Dr. Barber enjoys painting, playing guitar, cooking and traveling.
