The Mike Huether Public Service Academy (Huether PSA) is a program housed within the School of American and Global Studies at South Dakota State University. The Huether PSA develops exceptional leaders who are empowered with the necessary knowledge, skills and values to embrace the responsibilities of citizenship and strengthen their communities at the local, regional and national levels.
A Pivotal Program
Through a comprehensive program blending academic rigor with hands-on experiences, the Academy offers a rich curriculum encompassing public policy, ethics, government and cultural competence. Embracing a cohort model, the Academy competitively selects up to 50 exceptional scholars annually, drawn from varied backgrounds and disciplines, united by a shared ambition to make a difference.
In addition to their chosen major at SDSU, students will complete coursework to earn a certificate in public service.
Course topics include:
- Intercultural competence
- Public administration
- State and local government
- Current world issues
- Professional ethics
Students will participate in events and experiences each semester to enrich their leadership journey.
- Annual LeadState retreats by cohort
- Service activities
- Student leadership opportunities within the Huether PSA
- Leadership seminars
- Huether PSA culture and community-building activities
Students will complete one internship* in their sector of choice:
- Nonprofit / Social Sector
- Private Sector
- Public / Government Sector
*All students admitted to the Huether PSA receive a $2,000 commitment award during their internship semester.

A healthy democracy demands that we develop leaders from all walks of life to address the multiple, complex and interrelated challenges we face. The Academy is seeking scholars interested in becoming strong leaders who will drive lasting positive change within their communities upon graduation.
