S.D. Nelson and Gregory Bryan to speak at South Dakota Art Museum
S.D. Nelson and Gregory Bryan, the men behind two South Dakota Art Museum exhibits of American Indian story illustrations, will speak on Sept. 12 at 5:45 p.m. during the 5-7 p.m. closing reception for S.D. Nelson: Sharing My Vision and A Life’s Work: Paul Goble Illustrations of American Indian Stories.
"Afghan War Rugs" opens at South Dakota Art Museum
Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia, an international exhibition of contemporary Afghan war rugs, opened Aug. 23 at the South Dakota Art Museum. The exhibition will be on view through Nov. 24, 2019.
Harvey Dunn prairie paintings exhibit on display
Many of Harvey Dunn’s most iconic paintings are on display in Harvey Dunn: Fences, Cows, Plows and oxen at South Dakota Art Museum through Aug. 11. This exhibition, drawn from the museum’s extensive collection of Harvey Dunn paintings, celebrates the hard-working agricultural backbone of the state of South Dakota.
Flourish: Marjolein Dallinga and Jantje Visscher - opens at South Dakota Art Museum
"Flourish: Marjolein Dallinga & Jantje Visscher", a Jodi Lundgren curated exhibition, opens today at South Dakota Art Museum and runs through Aug. 4. As the museum’s curator of exhibits, Lundgren is adept at identifying and connecting artists and works with contrasting styles and mediums tied together through common themes and sources of inspiration.
Wounded Knee massacre victims commemorated
Dec. 29 marks the 128th anniversary of the Wounded Knee Massacre. To commemorate the estimated 300 Lakota men, women and children killed that day in 1890, South Dakota Art Museum and the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies (CAIRNS) invite the public to visit the Campus Green behind the South Dakota Art Museum any time from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 29.
South Dakota Art Museum receives grant to conserve Ada Caldwell artwork
Artist and professor Ada B. Caldwell played an important role at South Dakota State University. She led the art department from 1899 to 1936 and taught famous illustrator Harvey Dunn. The South Dakota Art Museum houses many of Caldwell’s works and nine of those important works are in need of conservation treatment.
