South Dakota Art Museum to host "Dakota Modern: The Art of Oscar Howe"
The acclaimed exhibition Dakota Modern: The Art of Oscar Howe culminates its national tour in Oscar Howe’s home state of South Dakota. Dakota Modern will be on view June 10, 2023–September 17, 2023 at the South Dakota Art Museum at South Dakota State University in Brookings.
Three SDSU attractions earn ‘Great Places’ designation for 2022
Three attractions on the South Dakota State University campus have made the cut in the South Dakota Department of Tourism’s listing of 2022 South Dakota Great Places. Among this year’s designees recognized for outstanding hospitality and customer service are McCrory Gardens, the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum and the South Dakota Art Museum.

Merkt named director of the South Dakota Art Museum
Donna Merkt, who is currently the director of museum experience at Oklahoma City’s Gaylord-Pickens Museum and the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, has been named the director of the South Dakota Art Museum following a national search. Merkt replaces Lynn Verschoor, who retired after 20 years in the position.
Former SDSU President Donates Works to 50th Anniversary Harvey Dunn Exhibition
Former South Dakota State University president Peggy Gordon Miller has donated five Harvey Dunn original paintings to the South Dakota Art Museum.
S.D. Nelson and Gregory Bryan to speak at South Dakota Art Museum
S.D. Nelson and Gregory Bryan, the men behind two South Dakota Art Museum exhibits of American Indian story illustrations, will speak on Sept. 12 at 5:45 p.m. during the 5-7 p.m. closing reception for S.D. Nelson: Sharing My Vision and A Life’s Work: Paul Goble Illustrations of American Indian Stories.
"Afghan War Rugs" opens at South Dakota Art Museum
Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia, an international exhibition of contemporary Afghan war rugs, opened Aug. 23 at the South Dakota Art Museum. The exhibition will be on view through Nov. 24, 2019.
