Eminent Homemaker
County: Beadle
Mrs. William A. Ruppel, Alpena, is the mother of three children. She also had a share in rearing five other children—four boys and one girl—in addition to her own. They were children who spent parts of several years enjoying the wholesome life on the Ruppel farm.
As a hobby, and for a portion of the family income, Ruppel raised chickens, specializing in White Rocks.
But it was in church and Extension Club wok she found an outlet for her energy. Ruppel is a member of Carlisle Club, having organized the first club in the county. She served on the County executive board, which supervises the work of local Extension Clubs. It was her leadership that helped to make the clubs in her county a success.
The drought of the early 1930s, which killed the beautiful shrubbery in the Ruppel yard, did not dampen Ruppel’s enthusiasm for the farm. In answer to the question, “What do you think of the future for women on the farm?” She replied, “The future of women on the farm is bright. There is a great opportunity for service, through clubs and other agencies, to improve one’s community. The Extension work of the college is the finest thing possible for farm women, as it helped them to broader horizon of service and living.”
