Eminent Homemaker
County: Corson
Viola Schuh, Isabel, is a lady who cares about people.
This quality, among others, was recognized as the South Dakota Board of Regents and South Dakota State University honored her as a 1980 Eminent Homemaker.
Others regard Schuh, a 25-year Extension homemaker and 16-year 4-H leader, as “someone who is concerned about others and is actively involved in community, county and state affairs.”
She has always been active. For 10 years she was a teacher in a rural Spencer school and Isabel Junior High School.
When she wasn’t teaching, she was involved with 4-H youth.
Schuh served as a leader from 1957 to 1973 with the boys’ Light Cap Rangers club and the girls’ Busy Bees club.
Schuh is a member of the Liberty Belles Extension Homemaker club which she originated in 1950.
She enjoys decorating cakes for family and friends, knitting sweaters for children and grandchildren and gardening—both to preserve and give away
At an age when many are looking to retirement, Schuh has recently become a community service aide through the Greater Missouri Development Corporation. She works with the elderly—taking blood pressures, seeing to their needs and acting as an advocate if they need help with Social Security.
The honored homemaker serves on the Dewey County March of Dimes committee, is active in the Isabel alumni program, works for the political candidates, serves with her husband as committee man and woman for Corson County, solicits funds to support the Isabel clinic, supported the drive for the Extension 4-H building in McIntosh, assisted in starting the “Food for the Elderly” program in Isabel, helped organize the Corson County Fair, served in all offices of the Ladies Aid for 33 years, was a 20-year Sunday school teacher, attends Bible study lessons regularly, was a County Extension board member from 1964-80, is District Extension Homemaker Council treasurer, was a member of the McIntosh School Board from 1971-76 and is secretary of the Susan Wilder Scholarship committee.
Her sons are all settled in South Dakota. Robert operates a dairy farm in Isabel, Gary is the manager of Lampert Lumber in Hot Springs, and Donald is on the home ranch. The Schuhs have four grandchildren.
