Niesje Wiersma, the former Niesje Kleinjan, and was born in Rhoon, Netherlands, on May 4, 1885. She came to America with the family in 1893. The John Kleinjan family moved to Volga in the spring of 1903. Wiersma resided four miles north of Volga until her marriage to John Wiersma on Dec. 7, 1911 at her father’s home near Volga.
The couple lived on two farms near Volga before moving to the present place, one and a fourth miles north of Volga, in 1919. It is a 160-acre diversified farm.
The Wiersma’s are the parents of five children, two daughters and three sons, all of whom are or have been in educational work.
Wiersma is a charter member of the Reformed Church which organized 50 years ago. She has also been president of the Ladies and Mission Society and a member of the Volga Jolly Bunch extension club for over 20 years.
Wiersma is a good manager in her many duties as a successful homemaker. She has always done her own baking and the usual household tasks. In recent years, she has helped to modernize and remodel the home.
When neighbors are in need of help, she is there to see what she can do. Because of her willingness to help, she is often referred to as “the mother of the community.” One neighbor expressed her contributions in this way: “Her five children and their successes best prove her success.”
