Eminent Homemaker
County: Shannon
Stella Malone, Porcupine, is a vigorous worker in extension home economics and 4-H programs in Shannon County. A willingness to put forth a little extra effort to see a job to completion and her philosophy of “living each day to enrich the lives of others” have been important factors in the selection of this eminent homemaker.
Born in Nebraska, she moved to Manderson and in 1922 married George Malone, owner of a general store in the Porcupine community. In 1930 when there was no school for the two oldest Malone children to attend, Malone encouraged the priests at Our Lady of Lourdes Indian Mission to begin a mission school.
When Cooperative Extension Service was introduced to Shannon County in 1935, Malone saw the opportunity for valuable homemaking education and helped organize extension clubs. She is a member of three home economics clubs in Shannon and Bennett Counties.
In 1935 she helped organize the Campfire Friendship 4-H Club among Indian school children and was a leader for nine years. She still teaches arts and crafts to four different groups of 4-H children each week at the Porcupine Mission School.
Malone helped organize the Shannon County 4-H Leaders Association in 1959 and has been treasurer and president. She represented Western South Dakota as a director on the State 4-H Leaders Association in 1962 and 1963. She has attended the statewide 4-H leader’s camp on six occasions and in 1963 she participated in the South Dakota 4-H leaders’ bus trip to the National Leaders Forum in Washington, D.C.
All of the Malone children have attended at least four years of college, Gerald and James are accountants at Wheatridge, Colorado. George is a veterinarian in Coronado, California and Thomas is an optometrist at Ogallala, Nebraska. Bernadette (Robert) Hughes, Kansas City, Missouri; Margaret (Pete) Faciszewski, Denver, Colorado and Mary (James) Cummins, Porcupine. The Malones have 42 grandchildren.
