Eminent Homemaker
County: Spink
A native South Dakotan, Ethel Wieting was born Ethel Stephens at Tulare on March 14, 1884.
As a young woman she learned dressmaking in Chicago, Illinois, then returned to Tulare where she married Charles Wieting, July 10, 1906.
The Wietings reared five children, three daughters and two sons. They were able to help four of them attend college during the depression years of the 1930s.
The Wietings operated a general store in Tulare before moving to their present farm in 1912. The farm is now a 640-acre diversified operation.
The depression years of the 1930s put Wieting’s dressmaking and homemaking abilities to the test. She sewed all of the children’s clothing, raised and preserved garden produce for the table, helped milk the cows and raised chickens for food or cash income.
Wieting is a member of the Methodist Church in Tulare and taught Sunday school for 47 years. She has been a member of one home extension club for over 30 years and a 4-H club leader for over 10 years. She has been active in County Farm Bureau affairs.
Wieting enjoys needlework, rug braiding, quilt making, growing flowers and watching television.
