Eminent Homemaker
County: Union
Carol Shubeck of Beresford is a long time 4-H supporter and is active in making her community a better place to live.
Carol's record of service to the Extension Service, 4-H and young people is commendable. In addition to being a 4-H leader for more than 25 years, she has also offered her time and talents as a state and county 4-H judge.
Working with individual 4-H members on their projects and record books, demonstrations and awards was her goal. Many of the parents of 4-H members said Carol Shubeck touched their children's lives and made a difference. Parents and 4-H members alike valued her education, time and love. She started two 4-H clubs in South Dakota, one for the underprivileged in Brookings. She also helped start the Brookings swim team. She served as president and vice president of Clay County Extension Clubs.
Her occupational interests reflect her willingness to help people. Carol worked for the Minnesota State 4-H Staff; taught Home Economics for four years at Alexandria, Minnesota; taught chemistry at Enderlin, North Dakota; and was 4-H County Agent in Douglas County, Minnesota.
On the farm, Carol Shubeck has always helped where needed. In addition to doing the book work, she is frequently involved in farm fix up projects and has always restored or made improvements in the homes she has lived in. She is currently restoring an old farm house on one of their farms. When she and her husband Fred moved into Beresford, she completely refinished all the wood floors and did extensive work to windows and walls, creating a beautiful home.
In light of her accomplishments, her hobbies are not surprising. They include braided rug making, refinishing furniture and restoring older homes. She has recently begun tracing her family genealogy. She has made beautiful hand-stitched quilts.
Carol Shubeck's previous honors include the 25 year 4-H Award; the Clay County Friends of 4-H Award; the Outstanding 4-H Leader Award; and the South Dakota 4-H Alumni Award.
Carol and her husband Fred Shubeck, a former manager of the SDSU South East Research Farm, have raised three children: Ruth, Mary and Paul.
