Bernice Cuppy of Wecota is a woman with many talents, and she is not afraid to share them. Whether leading a community program, designing and sewing clothes, judging at county and state fairs or preparing meals for large groups, Bernice has left her mark on her community.
Cuppy has lived on a farm all her life. As the oldest of six children, she quickly became responsible for canning vegetables, baking and doing household chores. She started working in the fields at the age of 10. Many times, she fixed her own breakdowns in the field. Even at this early age, she showed strong determination to get the job done.
Cuppy has been a 4-H leader for 19 years, serving on the Fashion Review Committee nearly 20 years. She now sponsors an annual award for the Dress Review. On the county level, she has been the County 4-H Key Leader in clothing for 10 years.
Church is very important to Bernice. She has been active in the Altar Society. She served as band president and secretary. She taught CCD classes for 16 years, belongs to C.D.A., has served as vice regent and regent and makes baptismal gowns.
Bernice was one of six who started the PTA program in their school, and served as president for two years. She has also served the American Cancer Society as vice president and as crusade chair and has chaired several special events.
Farmers Union is another organization that has benefited from Bernice Cuppy's dedication and leadership. She served the organization as secretary and treasurer for several years. She also has catered numerous meals, ranging from the Farmers Union Oil Company and Elevator suppers to weddings and anniversaries.
Bernice and her husband Ray have six daughters: Linda Dikoff of Onaka; Barb Heien of Onida; Diane Wolf of Aberdeen; Patti Homan of Beardsley, Minnesota; Nancy Homan of Milbank; and Donna McGuire of Watertown. When Alfred and Joyce Greiner were killed in an automobile accident, the Cuppys raised their children. Joyce was the sister of Bernice. The Greiner children include Cindy Vincent of Redfield; Jeff Greiner of Faulkton; and Pam Aamold of Watertown.
