Graduate Counseling and Human Development – Rapid City Campus

About the Graduate Program

  • The program leads to a Master’s of Science or Master’s of Education degree with preparation for licensure.
  • Class Format – Classes meet one night per week, Monday–Thursday, 4:30-7:20 p.m. or 7:30-10:10 p.m.
  • Full time faculty – two; adjunct faculty – eight.
  • Faculty members are fully licensed counselors in their respective areas and practicing in the community.
  • Students attend full (nine credits) or part-time (six credits) and the program takes two to four years, depending on individual attendance.
  • Summer classes – include required and elective classes on a rotating schedule.
  • Admission to the counseling program requirements include the following:
    • Undergraduate GPA of 2.75
    • Completed application form
    • Two letters of recommendation
    • A goals statement
    • An official transcript
    • Background check
    • $35 application fee

Accreditation

The program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP). All students are prepared to take a state licensure or national certification exam in their preparation area. Our students have a very successful pass rate on the National Counselor Exam (NCE).

  1. Applicant Applies to the Graduate School prior to the CHRD deadline.
  2. Applicant Applies to the CHRD Program:

    2. A one page, typed goal statement explaining your aspirations and goals for the counseling/student affairs profession.
    3. Disclosure Form
    4. CHRD Recommendations
      1. You will need two recommendation forms and two letters of recommendation.
  3. Faculty Review Applicant’s File
  4. Admission Interview
  5. State/Federal Background Check
  6. Final Admissions Decision
    1. NOTE: Students must register for the term in which they are admitted, or they will be inactivated. If unable to start during the term of acceptance, students can request a program deferral one time for up to one academic year.
