The Hilton M. Briggs Library, built in 1977 for $3.85 million, is home to three floors of academic materials, study space, computers, printers and scanners.
Building Description
Students can access physical and electronic materials at the library or online through the library's catalog. The library has over 700,000 volumes and over 40 public computers.
The lower level has periodicals, maps, government documents, and microfilm. The main level has current periodicals, new books, reference materials, and coffee and vending machines for a quick snack. The general book collection is located on the top level, along with study rooms students can check out. The SDSU Archives and Special Collections and the Senator Thomas A. Daschle Congressional Research Study are located on this floor as well.
The Hilton M. Briggs Library is named for the university’s longest-serving president, Hilton M. Briggs. He served 17 years as president from June 4, 1958 to July 1, 1975, overseeing the most extensive expansion of the campus to date. Fifty-five percent of all the buildings on the campus at the time of his retirement were built during his tenure as president. On July 1, 1964, under his leadership, the South Dakota Legislature granted South Dakota State College university status.
